My experience of working in schools began in October 2009, following a career in archaeology. I completed a PGCE in 2011, with teaching placements in KS1 and KS2 (rated ‘good’ and ‘outstanding’) in Hackney and Tottenham. After qualifying, the draw of the sea and the South Downs brought me to Brighton, where I spent a year supply teaching before setting up my tutoring business, Brighton Tutor, which has been growing successfully since 2012.
More recently, I have chosen to specialise in autism-friendly tuition. I noticed that many of my students learn best with extra structure, patience, and flexibility. As more children with SEND and autism came to me for support, I completed specialist, certified training in understanding autism. This has equipped me with the tools to adapt lessons and create a calm, supportive space where every learner can thrive.
I have a strong understanding of autism and the different ways it can affect learning, confidence and engagement. Every learner is different, so I take the time to get to know each student, what helps them feel comfortable, and how they learn best. Some of the ways I adapt include:
- Clear Structure – Breaking lessons into small, manageable steps so students know what to expect and don’t feel overwhelmed.
- Patience and Flexibility – Moving at the student’s pace, allowing extra time when needed, and explaining ideas in different ways until they are clearly understood.
- Sensory-Friendly Approach – Keeping sessions calm, without unnecessary noise or distractions, and adapting to individual needs (for example, using visual supports or allowing movement breaks).
- Positive, Encouraging Style – Focusing on building confidence as well as skills, celebrating small wins along the way.
My goal is to create a safe and supportive space where autistic learners can enjoy learning, feel successful, and build lasting confidence.
